Rules to Look For

Hair coloring can not be done haphazardly. The use of hair dye needs to be done according to the recommended hair coloring rules, namely by:
  • Pay attention to the rules of use on the packaging

  • Read the rules of use and safety of use in detail on the packaging of hair dye products, and use according to the rules of use.
  • Conduct patch test

  • Before it is applied to the hair, it is recommended to do a patch test on the skin first. If the itchy area feels itchy, rashes appear, the skin feels blistered and burning, you may experience an inflammatory reaction to the skin due to allergies or irritation to the chemicals contained therein. If so, it is recommended not to apply the hair dye to your hair.
  • Shampoo in the previous day

  • If you decide to dye your hair tomorrow, it is advisable to wash your hair today. The goal is that natural oils contained in the hair are maintained properly, so as to protect the scalp from irritation due to the use of hair dyes that contain ammonia.
  • Do not mix hair dye products

  • Do not carelessly mix different hair dye products. This action might cause damage to the hair and scalp.
  • Wear gloves when using coloring

  • When mixing or applying coloring products to the hair, don't forget to wear gloves. This is done to minimize direct contact with chemicals contained in hair dye products.
  • Rinse the dye thoroughly

  • After the hair dye is applied to the hair, rinse the hair immediately with cold water until clean, after the specified time. Generally, shampooing using a new shampoo is allowed two days after hair coloring is done.
  • Use a special shampoo for colored hair

  • When shampooing, you are advised to use a special shampoo for colored hair. This type of shampoo contains a small amount of detergent and does not contain sulfates or parabens so the hair color does not fade easily.

Natural Dyes as an Alternative

For those of you who are worried about the chemicals of hair dye products, hair dyes made from natural plants such as henna, can be an option because it is relatively safer. However, you should be careful in choosing henna products that are truly natural. Black henna should be avoided, because henna with this color is at risk of containing synthetic dyes, such as paraphenylenediamine (PPD). You can choose henna with orange, or a color that looks rather red and brown, if you want to use natural hair dyes. Don't just follow the hair coloring trend.
